Senior Night

Covenant recognized two of its seniors, Josh Braden (140) and Matt Worley (215), during their only home match of the season on Wednesday, Feb. 2.  The match was originally supposed to be a tri with Bishop Ireton and Pope John Paul the Great, but Bishop Ireton did not make it due to weather concerns.  Covenant was competitive against a solid PJP team, winning 4 of 9 varsity matches, and all three exhibition matches.  The night started with the 103 lb weight class, as Covenant’s Paul Huemme lost 12-7 to Firth (PJP) in a match that was much closer than the score suggests. Huemme beat Firth in overtime earlier in the season. Jamie Wilcox (112) got Covenant on the board with a 23-12 major decision over Carias (PJP).  After giving up forfeits at 119 and 125, Covenant continued to roll as Nathan Sieminski (130) won 16-11 over Gordan (PJP), and Josiah Zodhiates (135) pinned Constantine (PJP) in 36 seconds.  Josh Braden (140) lost by fall to Haskell (PJP), but David Widder-Varhegyi (145) followed with a 48 second pin over Garcia (PJP).  The rest of the match was rough for Covenant as they had to give up two more forfeits at 152 and 160 before Gage Jenkins (171), David Collmus (189), and Matt Worley (215) all lost by fall.  The final team score was 45-19 in favor of Pope John Paul the Great.  Covenant does not wrestle again until Saturday, Feb. 12 when they host the VIC Tournament.
